The big f reeze

I’ve just compiled a nevv kernel from a tarball and the vvhole process seemed to go fine, but once I’ve copied the bzlmage to the boot directory and used linuxconf to get lilo to point to the nevv kernel and then reboot the damn thing freezes at the first line.

i As LILO booted the kernel, then it is J probably dovvn to a mis-configured I kernel. Start by getting the latest release, vvhich is 2.4.4, or 2.2.19 if you’re sticking to the

2.2 series, and start again from scratch vvith a kernel configuration. Generally, any configuration options vvhich have been set vvhen you did make mrproper should be left alone, unless you are 100% sure that you don’t need them – such as SCSI options on a IDE only system. Once you have a machine that vvorks, you can disable any options vvhich you think you might need, one by one, then find out vvhich one caused the machine to stop booting.
